How To Prepare Your Bus For Winter

Those winter winds are blowing.

Before the temperature drops even further, take the time to ensure your bus is prepared. Being proactive now can help prevent problems down the road.

Whether you own a single skoolie or an entire fleet of buses, here are several things you can do to get ready for the coming cold:

Check Your Wiper Blades

Wiper blades become less and less effective over time, so make sure you check on yours regularly. The last thing you want is to lose visibility as you head down the highway. On average, wiper blades should be replaced every six to 12 months. If you get in the habit of changing them every year before Christmas, you’ll be well prepared for snow and sleet.

Clean Or Replace Cabin Air Filters

The quality of air in your bus is a direct result of the cabin air filter. If it’s dirty, so is the air you breathe. A clogged filter is also taxing on your vehicle’s HVAC system. A clean filter will keep you warmer in the winter.

Check The Front Defroster Vent

It is common for defroster vents to get clogged with debris. Ensuring strong airflow will help you melt ice that accumulates on the windshield.

Check The Winter Front

Inspect your winter front to make sure the snaps are ready for installation. Although they may seem small, these covers can offer great protection from the elements and help your bus start on those really cold days.

Check Auxiliary Heaters

Be sure to check any auxiliary heaters. You don’t want to head out on a trip only to learn that the extra heat you expected isn’t available.

Perform A Battery Test

Checking battery performance is crucial throughout the year. However, it’s even more important in the winter. Be mindful of any decrease in performance as well as visual clues such as corrosion. You should also perform a cold cranking amp (CCA) test. This measures the battery’s ability to start in cold temperatures. The higher the number, the better.
