Do I Need A CDL To Drive A School Bus?

Before getting behind the wheel of a bus, it’s important to ask a common question.

Do I need a CDL?

A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is mandatory depending on the vehicle. States have different requirements, but in general, you will need a CDL if the vehicle:

  • Weighs more than 26,000 pounds

  • Is designed to carry 16 or more passengers (including the driver)

  • Transports hazardous materials

Those are the requirements here in Indiana. If you live outside the Hoosier state, be sure to check the CDL requirements where you live.

How Can I Get My CDL?

To receive your CDL, you must pass a written test as well as the CDL skills exam.

Also, just like your regular driver’s license, CDLs expire. In Indiana, that time period is four years. Be sure to keep an eye on the expiration date. If you wait too long to renew, you will lose your ability to drive the vehicle and may be charged a late fee.

What About Endorsements?

Depending on who or what you transport, a CDL alone might not be enough. For example, Endorsement P is for passenger transportation and Endorsement S is for school buses.

Do I Need A CDL To Drive A Skoolie?

Converted buses, referred to as skoolies, often do not fall under the same stipulations as traditional school buses. Although you’ll want to check the requirements of your state, chances are you will not need a CDL to drive a skoolie.

Additionally, it’s important to remember to make the switch from a school bus or commercial title to an RV title. This can vary depending on where you live, but a reinspection may be required.
