AC Summer Maintenance to Prepare Your Fleet for the School Year

As July rolls around, it’s time for bus operators to get ready for the upcoming school year. One aspect that should be on your radar is the air conditioning (AC) system.

Maintaining your bus’s AC system helps ensure the comfort and wellbeing of students and staff. There are several steps you can take now to benefit your fleet for the upcoming school year.

Three main components to an AC system should be examined frequently. This includes the:

  • Engine Compartment

  • Condenser

  • Evaporator

Each of these components have different preventative maintenance tasks that will help extend your AC system’s longevity and health.

Follow the preventative maintenance checklist below to guide your summer maintenance journey.

1. Engine Compartment

  • Tension and inspect belts

  • Inspect hoses and fittings for leaks and wear

  • Check compressor mount

2. Condenser(s)

  • Clean condenser coil

  • Check condenser coil for damage

  • Check operation of condenser fans

  • Inspect hoses and fittings for leaks and wear

  • Check sight glass for moisture indicator

3. Evaporator(s)

  • Clean filter

  • Check operation of evaporator blowers

  • Inspect hoses and fittings for leaks and wear

  • Check condensate drain lines

  • Clean coils


If you experience any of these warning signs, contact a qualified technician as soon as possible:

  • Vibration and/or noise from engine compartment

  • Oil around refrigeration hose connections

  • Water dripping in passenger area from evaporator/ducts

  • Vibration and/or noise from evaporator area

  • Noticeable decrease in system performance

  • Reduced air flow
