Building Community: The Social Importance of School Buses

School buses are more than just transportation to and from school. They play a vital role in fostering community connectedness and promoting safety.

With students all over the country heading back to school this month, we want to recognize the importance of school buses and how they contribute to building communities.

Building Community Through School Buses

A Daily Gathering Point

For many students, the bus is their first social gathering of the day. As they wait at the bus stop, they have the opportunity to talk with their classmates and form connections. Fostering relationships with their peers can play an essential role in forming friendships throughout their school years. This can lead to the betterment of social skills and developing a community bond throughout the student body.

Promoting Environmental Consciousness

By encouraging children to use school buses instead of individual cars, schools contribute to reducing traffic congestion and lowering carbon emissions. School buses prevent over 20 million tons of CO2 from being released into the environment each year.

Community Building Events and Activities

School buses serve as the backbone to many community building events such as field trips, sporting events, and extracurricular activities. This encourages students to get into extra activities outside of school as more access is provided. This provides students, teachers, and parents with the opportunity to come together and support the community by celebrating their achievements.

Ensuring Safety on the Road

Since school buses are specifically designed to be highly visible, equipped with flashing lights, stop arms, and to protect passengers when boarding, students are safer on school buses compared to individual cars. In fact, students are about 70 times more likely to get to school safely if they take the school bus instead of traveling by car.

Inclusivity and Diversity

School buses accommodate people from diverse backgrounds, cultures, and neighborhoods. Students from different walks of life get to interact and learn from each other. This exposure to diversity fosters a more inclusive environment where everyone feels included and valued.

At Kerlin Bus Sales & Leasing, we recognize how important school buses are to the community. That’s why we teamed up with Warsaw Community Schools to donate a bus to Baker Youth Club in June. We know how impactful buses can be to the students in our community, supporting both educational and extracurricular activities.

School buses also provide career opportunities in the community. Earlier this year, we had the privilege of working with an intern through the Heartland Career Center, who is now pursuing CDL courses. Our hope is to empower students with opportunities to help them reach their goals and future careers.
