Forgetting to set the parking brake is an easy mistake to make.

Between the route, the time, and the passengers, bus drivers have plenty on their minds. However, the consequences of that momentary lapse can be significant. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, vehicle rollaways injure approximately 2,000 people each year.

Thankfully, technological advances continue to make buses safer. One of these newest advances, the Bendix Intellipark®, is now available for some Thomas Built Buses.

What Is It?

Intellipark® is a parking brake from Bendix that uses electronic interlocks to control the release of the brake. If a potential rollaway is detected, the parking brake automatically sets itself after 30 seconds.

The driver must then take intentional steps to release it:

• Press the service brake pedal

• Turn the key into the on position

• Close the wheelchair lift door (when equipped)

Which Buses Are Compatible?

Intellipark® is a factory-installed option for Saf-T-Liner C2 buses that are equipped with either the Cummins diesel or Detroit diesel powertrain and air brake package. It also comes standard on the Saf-T-Liner® C2 Jouley® electric bus.

What Are The Other Benefits?

Drivers will also appreciate several other unique benefits:

• LED lights clearly indicate the status of the parking brake

• The ergonomic dash-mounted switch is more comfortable to operate than traditional park valves

• New integrations could be available in the future

Although not a replacement for driver safety, Intellipark® is an additional feature that can prevent rollaways, stop crashes before they happen, and provide overall peace of mind.
